Tanzania – Zanzibar: Beyond Africa – Travel to See, Not to See

ΤΟ ΤΑΞΙΔΙ ΜΕ ΜΙΑ ΜΑΤΙΑ

“The only person I envy is the one who hasn’t gone to Africa yet – because he has so much to look forward to.
– Richard Mullin

In Tanzania and Zanzibar, we are not just visitors – we are connecting with the real Africa. From the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater, we discover the wild splendour of nature, where lions, elephants and leopards live freely. The annual migration of wildebeest and zebra fills the plains with energy, and in Ngorongoro, we witness life as it has been for millennia.

In the village of Masaai, we experience a way of life completely connected to nature.

In Zanzibar, the “Spice Island”, we are welcomed by a paradise of cultures, flavours and images. Stone Town, with its charming, winding streets, takes us on a journey through history, while dreamy beaches and vibrant coral reefs offer the perfect balance between relaxation and exploration. This experience is more than travel – it’s an invitation to experience Africa and discover the stories, people and beauty that make every moment priceless.

The Festival

Sauti Za Busara (The Sounds of Wisdom) takes place in Stone Town, the capital of Zanzibar every February and is a premier cultural and musical event and has been named one of the top 5 music festivals in Africa, according to CNN. The main part of the festival takes place at Stone Town’s Old Fort: a stunning piece of Ottoman colonial architecture that has stood for more than 200 years and remains the oldest surviving building in the city. In this stunning setting on the town’s beachfront, thousands of people gather for 3 unforgettable days each year to celebrate the richness and diversity of African music. A rich mix of traditional and contemporary music from the black continent with more than 400 established musicians and new acts. Participating musicians from Tanzania and Zanzibar, as well as from Morocco, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Tunisia, South Africa, Congo and other African countries, already representing such as ngoma, taarab, gnawa, kidumbak, muziki wa dansi, desertrock, afrojazz, hiphop.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

1η ΗΜΕΡΑ: ΑΘΗΝΑ - KILIMANJARO - ARUSHA

Meeting at the airport and flight to Kilimanjaro via the station. Arrival at noon. Transfer to our hotel in Arusha. Free afternoon for a city tour for a first contact with the black continent. Overnight stay.

Our adventure begins here. Karibu Tanzania!

2η ΗΜΕΡΑ: SERENGETI SAFARI

“I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up and was not happy” – Ernest Hemingway

Today, the dream of many of us to explore and wander the vast plains of the Serengeti to observe wildlife in its natural habitat is becoming a reality!

“Serengeti” comes from the Maasai language meaning “endless plains” and that’s really the best description. With an area of 14,760 square kilometres, the Serengeti National Park is the largest and most famous national park in Tanzania. Since 1981 it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Serengeti welcomes us with a magical symphony of sights and sounds. Our encounter with the animals is a dance between observer and observed, a deep connection with untamed nature. Entering the heart of the savannah, a sense of anticipation fills the air. Our first encounters, with a herd of gazelles or zebras, are a small revelation. At every turn on the dusty trail, the landscape seems to come alive and the animals reveal themselves.

The giraffes strut past our jeep in a superior style looking down on us from above. On the river banks and in the waterholes, we encounter hippos submerged in the water, as well as crocodiles patiently waiting for their next meal. As we approach a waterhole, elephants, the gentle giants of the savannah, have come to quench their thirst with regal grace. The lions, the undisputed kings and queens of the jungle, rest under the shade of an acacia tree, watching our every move. It is a moment of mutual curiosity and respect, where we, the observers, become part of their world, if only for a brief moment.

We enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of African nature, surrounded by the wild beauty of the savannah!

The “vast plains” are unusually home to an impressive variety of wildlife, including the famous “Big 5” (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalo), who share the savannah with a host of other creatures, including cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, impala, ostriches, ostriches, baboons, hippos and many species of birds.

Dinner and overnight in glamping tents, a special experience in nature with the special lullaby of animal voices!

3η ΗΜΕΡΑ: SERENGETI SAFARI

February is one of the most magical months for safari in the Serengeti National Park, as the savannah comes alive with intense wildlife activity. The landscape is filled with the lush green colour of the grasslands, creating the perfect backdrop for the birth season of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. Thousands of newborns learn to survive alongside their mothers, offering a rare opportunity to witness this natural wonder up close. Predators – lions, leopards and cheetahs – follow the herds closely, adding tension to the scene. The ‘vast plains’ of the Serengeti, with the legendary ‘Big Five’ and other rare species, are transformed into a veritable theatre of wildlife. Every turn on the safari reveals unique scenes and unpredictable moments, giving a complete experience of African nature.

Setting a table in nature, we enjoy a picnic lunch overlooking the vast African landscape!

As the sun disappears behind the savannah horizon, the Serengeti is painted in shades of gold and purple, creating a breathtaking backdrop. The moment is magical and everything around us, from the landscape to the sounds of nature, fills us with awe. We return to our lodge for dinner, conversation and sharing of the day’s impressions and feelings around the fire.

4η ΗΜΕΡΑ: NGORONGORO SAFARI

Early in the morning we depart for the magnificent crater of Ngorongoro.

The Ngorongoro Crater and the surrounding highlands together are some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet. Volcanic craters create stunning backdrops to some of Africa’s most fertile and richest grasslands. It is the world’s most famous crater and the largest intact volcanic caldera with a multitude of animals. Ngorongoro is justifiably one of the continent’s most famous safari destinations.

Inside the crater, we find an incredible variety of animals, such as the “Big Five”, cheetahs, hyenas and many, many species of birds. Our ability to get so close to them provides us with incredible photo opportunities.

Around the crater area, we visit a village of the Maasai tribe. The Maasai are an indigenous ethnic group of East Africa, living mainly in Kenya and Tanzania. They are renowned for their distinct cultural identity and customs.

During our visit, we watch their traditional dances and songs, learn about their special way of life and their rich cultural heritage. They open and welcome us into their traditional houses, the “bomas”, made from local materials such as mud, wood and cow dung. We interact with the village artisans who create intricate beads and jewelry, offering us the opportunity to buy authentic handmade souvenirs.

By visiting a Maasai village, we learn and appreciate their unique way of life and most importantly support the local community.

Dinner and overnight at a lovely lodge on the shores of Lake Manyara, with zebra, wildebeest and monkeys filling the natural beauty of the landscape.

5η ΗΜΕΡΑ: ΠΕΡΙΗΓΗΣΗ ΣΤΟ ΧΩΡΙΟ MTO WA MBU

After breakfast, we go to the village of Mto Wa Mbu for a cultural tour. Mto Wa Mbu is a living canvas of cultures, hosting over 120 different ethnic groups in Tanzania, living and working together in harmony. Our visit to the village gives us the opportunity to explore first-hand the daily life, customs and traditions of this unique community.

At noon we enjoy an authentic Tanzanian meal, made with local ingredients and traditional recipes. We return to the lodge, where the afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the magic of nature at Lake Manyara. Dinner and overnight.

6η ΗΜΕΡΑ: MOSHI

After breakfast, we depart for Moshi, a lively town at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. With the majestic mountain as a backdrop, Moshi welcomes us with an authentic local atmosphere: traditional markets full of fresh produce and handmade items and streets buzzing with the sounds and aromas of Tanzanian culture. The locals are warm and welcoming, always willing to share stories and traditions, making us feel like part of their everyday life. Free afternoon to walk around the city. Overnight.

7η ΗΜΕΡΑ: MATERUNI WATEFALL, COFFEE TOUR

After breakfast, we begin a hike through lush green trails, crossing the courtyards and houses of the Chagga tribe, leading us to the impressive Materuni waterfall. The locals call it ‘Nambe’, meaning ‘firstborn’, as it is the first waterfall born from the slopes of Kilimanjaro.

This imposing waterfall, one of the highest in the region (150 metres), pours icy, crystal clear water from the glacier, forming a natural basin at 2,500 metres above sea level. Its water flows through valleys and hills, passing through rainforests and ‘shambas’ (coffee, banana and avocado plantations). When we arrive, we can cool off in the natural pool of the waterfall, enjoying the energy and beauty of the landscape.

Our tour continues with a visit to the local village, amidst the coffee plantations. The locals will introduce us to the secrets of coffee cultivation, showing us every step of the process, from the harvesting of the berries to the brewing of the coffee. In the afternoon, we return to the hotel for free time and relaxation before spending the night.

8η ΗΜΕΡΑ: KILIMANJARO - ΖΑΝΖΙΒΑΡΗ - ΦΕΣΤΙΒΑΛ SAUTI ZA BUSARA

Breakfast and departure for the airport, flight to the enchanting Zanzibar! Check-in at our hotel and free time to relax and explore the city.

In the early afternoon we meet at the unique Sauti Za Busara in the old fortress of the city located a few meters from our hotel. Overnight stay.

9η ΗΜΕΡΑ: STONE TOWN - PRISON ISLAND

Stone Town, the soul of Zanzibar: a city ideal for getting lost in its streets, gazing and stimulating your senses!

We wander its winding streets with its magnificent architecture, a charming combination of Arab, Persian, Indian and African influences. We observe and photograph the carved doorways, pass by places of worship, and enjoy the sounds and smells of the city.

The heart of Stone Town is in the market. The Darajani market is a wonderful experience: the smell of spices overwhelms you. Fruits, vegetables, meat and fish are in abundance. Small shops sell the unique, colourful local textiles and clothes. Small vendors welcome you and show you their wares. “Bargaining” is in their customs as the best way to bargain. The tour of the city continues: Old Fort, Forodhani Gardens, House of Wonders, Slave Market/Monument, Freddie Mercury’s House, places of prayer.

We sail with a fishing boat to Prison Island, a small island, which in the past was used as a quarantine island for those who were heading to Zanzibar. Today, it is a sanctuary for giant sea turtles of one of the few of their kind.

In the afternoon and evening we are at the old fortress, at the Sauti Za Busara Festival. Overnight stay.

10η ΗΜΕΡΑ: STONE TOWN - PRISON ISLAND - ΦΕΣΤΙΒΑΛ SAUTI ZA BUSARA

Free breakfast for rest, city tour, shopping or an optional excursion.

In the afternoon and evening we are at the old fortress, the last day of the Festival.

The end of another day comes with the silence of the starry sky and Zanzibar sleeps!

11η ΗΜΕΡΑ: SPICE TOUR, JAMBIANI

Zanzibar was one of the world’s leading producers of spices such as cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. We tour an organic farm with a wide variety of plants. We touch, smell and taste the varieties of spices and herbs used in cooking, cosmetics and traditional medicines.

We enjoy a lunch of local flavours and sample a wide variety of tropical fruits.

Then we go to Jambiani, which is the base of our excursions for the next few days. Endless powdery sand, palm trees and turquoise waters. The boats hang ashore at low tide, waiting for the tide to ebb again. Overnight.

12η ΗΜΕΡΑ: BLUE SAFARI

Today we have a wonderful marine experience sailing to one of the many islands in the Indian Ocean, where time is lost with the tide. We board a traditional fishing boat and set sail. As we sail, we’ll probably see dolphins dancing around us, ripping through the waves next to our boat.

We snorkel and enjoy the wonderful world of the deep, observing the countless colorful fish and living reefs.

At noon we grill fresh seafood and fish on the beach and enjoy a delicious lunch. Return and free afternoon. Overnight stay.

13η ΗΜΕΡΑ: JOZANI FOREST, PINGUE (THE ROCK RESTAURANT), SUNSET SAILING

We cross the Jozani forest: we walk, following the rare Red Colobus monkeys. We observe how they eat, take care of each other, jump from branch to branch. We learn about the animals and the different plants that “inhabit” this forest.

The landscape is a mosaic of mangrove trees, tropical and coral forests, as well as groundwater and salt marshes.

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is the only national park in Zanzibar and covers an area of 50 square kilometres. The main inhabitant of the forest is the Red Colobus monkeys, a species of red colobus monkey endemic to Zanzibar. It is currently classified as an endangered species as its population is declining and has been placed under protection.

After our tour of Jozani Forest, we depart for Pingue, where the Rock Restaurant is located. A famous restaurant located on a rock in the sea! Depending on the tide, you can go on foot or by boat! We eat lunch and then set sail on a traditional wooden boat to watch the sunset sailing into the Indian! We enjoy the golden red colors of the sunset, experiencing this magical moment with all our being! The sound of the sea awakens all our senses and at the same time calms and soothes us. Return and overnight stay.

Today we start our day in the village of Kizimkazi, a traditional fishing village. We visit the local school, where we have the opportunity to get to know the life of the children and the way they learn through their lessons and daily activities.

Then, we tour the village and get in touch with the daily life of the locals. The children, full of joy and curiosity, approach us, laughing and playing with us, filling the atmosphere with happy moments. The women of the village open their homes to us and welcome us warmly into their lives: we sit with them, discussing their life, traditions and customs, while we participate in the preparation of local recipes, discovering the flavours of their cuisine. It is a unique experience that brings us close to the authentic warmth and hospitality of the community. Return and overnight stay.
