Beyond the Blue: A Journey Into the Soul of Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a place full of magic, where the white beaches of the Indian Ocean and the Hakuna Matata philosophy invite you to see life differently. This island is more than an exotic destination. It is a deep experience that brings cultures and people together.

We travel there to feel, to be inspired and to discover our own truth through Africa’s eyes. Historic Stone Town and secluded sandbanks become the setting for a meaningful reconnection, where simplicity and the genuine local smile remind us what it means to be truly present.

For us, the Xploristas, Zanzibar is the island of our heart. It is a place we have been travelling to for years, a place where we know the people and live moments that do not fit inside ordinary travel guides. Here, you have the chance to experience every moment with all your senses and return not only with a full camera, but with a new way of seeing the world.

What We Will Experience Together

  • Prison Island: We sail to meet the impressive Aldabra giant tortoises, the island’s timeless guardians.
  • Spices & Flavours: We visit a spice farm and taste traditional flavours during an authentic local meal.
  • Blue Safari: We discover pure calm on a secluded sandbank, enjoying lunch on the sand beside the waves.
  • Jozani Forest: We walk through the forest and observe the rare Red Colobus monkeys playing among the trees.
  • The Taste of Connection: We are welcomed into a local home, where we cook together and share our meal.
  • Education & Everyday Life: We visit a local school and discover the beauty hidden in the island’s most sincere smiles.
  • Sunset Sailing: We enjoy a dreamy boat ride on a traditional wooden dhow at the most beautiful hour of the day.
  • Memories on the Indian Ocean: We dance on a small island, wrapped in the ocean breeze, creating moments that will stay with us.

🌍
Community Impact: Through our visits, we support the local community, the school and the families who open their homes to us.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN ZANZIBAR

Jambo! Our adventure begins in Jambiani, a quiet village on the island’s southeast coast, where daily life follows the rhythm of the ocean.

Karibu Zanzibar!

DAY 2: JAMBIANI, THE FIRST ENCOUNTER

Meet the tour leader and the rest of the group at a welcome meeting at the hotel. Our journey begins in Jambiani, a quiet village on the southeast coast of Zanzibar, where daily life follows the rhythm of the ocean. Today is dedicated to slowing down and gently adjusting to the island’s pace. We take time to feel the sand beneath our feet, enjoy the endless blue of the Indian Ocean and ease into the spirit of “Pole Pole” — slowly, slowly.

Here, the tide transforms the landscape throughout the day. Women walk out to the reef to gather seaweed, fishermen return with their catch, and children move between school and the shore. In the afternoon, a relaxed walk through the village offers our first connection with everyday life and the people who shape it. It’s a soft beginning, where the experience unfolds naturally, without rush. Overnight stay.

DAY 3: BLUE SAFARI, A DAY IN THE ENDLESS BLUE

Today we experience the sea in a simple, grounded way, sailing toward one of the sandbanks of the Indian Ocean, a stretch of sand that slowly disappears again with the tide. Safari Blue is known as one of the most beautiful boat experiences in Zanzibar.

We set off from a small harbor in the south. Along the way, dolphins sometimes appear, moving quietly through the water beside us. We stop to snorkel, watching schools of fish and exploring the reef.

Around midday, we reach a sandbank where lunch is prepared on the spot. Fresh seafood is grilled over the fire, with lobster, fish, calamari and octopus, served with rice and vegetables. We spend time here by the water, resting, swimming and walking through the nearby mangroves.

In the afternoon, we return and the rest of the day remains free. Overnight stay.

DAY 4: FROM THE HEART OF THE FOREST TO THE OCEAN PARTY

We begin the day in Jozani Forest, moving slowly through mangroves and dense tropical vegetation. The path opens and closes around us, and along the way we come across the rare Red Colobus monkeys, watching them as they move freely through the branches.

We continue toward Pingwe, where we stop by The Rock, the small restaurant set on a rock in the sea, before enjoying lunch at a relaxed seaside spot nearby.

In the afternoon, we leave the shore behind on a traditional wooden boat. As the light softens and the sky turns to shades of gold and orange, we reach a sandbank, surrounded only by the ocean. A simple beach setup awaits us. Music plays softly, people gather, and the atmosphere shifts naturally. We spend time here barefoot on the sand, moving, laughing and sharing the moment, before returning to the hotel. Overnight stay.

DAY 5: JAMBIANI - FREE DAY OR OPTIONAL EXCURSION TO NUNGWI/KENDWA

Today unfolds at your own pace. You may choose to stay in Jambiani, where the rhythm of the tide shapes the day. Time by the ocean, a walk through the village, small moments of connection with everyday life, or simply rest, each option finds its place naturally.

For those who feel like exploring a different side of the island, there is the option to head north to Nungwi and Kendwa. Here, the sea remains constant, inviting for long swims at any time of the day. The hours pass between white sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters, gradually leading into sunset before the return to our base.

DAY 6: LIFE LESSONS & WARM CHAPATI

We begin the day at the local school, meeting the children and teachers and spending time together in their daily environment. Through playing and shared moments, we get a closer sense of both the joy of learning and the realities they navigate each day.

Later, our friend Haji welcomes us into his home. Together with Fatma, we learn how to prepare chapati, Zanzibar’s traditional bread. The meal comes together slowly, filled with the warmth of the kitchen and the aromas of spices. We sit down with the family and share what has been prepared, exchanging stories around the same table.

In the afternoon, we have free time for one last walk on the sands of Jambiani. Overnight stay.

DAY 7: FROM SPICE AROMAS TO THE ALLEYS OF STONE TOWN

Zanzibar once stood among the world’s leading spice producers, known for cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. Today we visit an organic farm, where a wide variety of plants grows side by side. We move through the fields slowly, touching, smelling and tasting spices and herbs used in cooking, cosmetics and traditional remedies.

We then share a meal with local flavours and take time to taste a variety of tropical fruits, each with its own texture and sweetness.

In the afternoon, we continue to Stone Town. After check-in at our hotel, the rest of the day remains free. Overnight stay.

DAY 8: STONE TOWN - THE LABYRINTH OF HISTORY & THE GIANTS OF PRISON ISLAND

We move through Stone Town along its narrow, winding alleys, where each turn reveals a different layer of the city. The architecture reflects a long history of influences, Arab, Persian, Indian and African, visible in the carved wooden doors, the buildings and the places of worship we pass along the way. The air carries a mix of sounds, voices and scents that belong to everyday life here.

At the centre of it all is Darajani Market. We walk through its busy pathways, where spices, fruit, vegetables, meat and fish fill the space with colour and movement. Small shops display fabrics and clothes, and the interaction with vendors becomes part of the experience, with bargaining unfolding naturally as part of the local rhythm.

Our walk continues through some of the city’s key points, including the Old Fort, Forodhani Gardens, the House of Wonders, the former Slave Market and Monument, Freddie Mercury’s House and nearby places of prayer.

Around midday, we leave the city behind and take a small boat to Prison Island. Once used as a quarantine station, it is now home to giant tortoises, offering the chance to observe them up close in a quiet setting.

As the day comes to an end, we return to the shore. The light softens over the Indian Ocean, reflecting on the water, while fishing boats move slowly across the horizon and children play along the sand. The city gradually lights up, and the evening settles in with a sense of calm. Overnight stay.
